Sherry FitzGerald Gleeson are thrilled to present this rare and exciting opportunity to acquire a traditional Irish residence, together with c. 67.5 acres of top quality agricultural land.
‘Turtulla Lodge’, situated on the outskirts of Thurles Town, in County Tipperary and is set in the heart of the Golden Vale, incorporating some of the finest fertile land in Ireland. Thurles is a Cathedral Town with a population of 8,000 approx., and the birthplace of the GAA or the Gaelic Athletic Association, the body that choreographs our traditional Irish sports.
Built in the mid eighteen hundreds and extended in the last century, Turtulla Lodge originated as a grand Farmhouse with a lovely out-building, incorporating a two storey stone-built Coach House with three stables and overhead grain storage. The homestead was later enlarged with the addition of further bedrooms, kitchen and bathroom in more recent years. Approached by a narrow stone lined avenue, the character of the original courtyard appears and captures the memory of farming activities in times past.
Although the main house requires considerable upgrading and modification, there are many original features, including the proportions of the two reception rooms and main bedrooms.
HISTORY AND LEGEND
Turtulla Lodge was always a lovely Homestead, testament to the placing of such traditional architectural features, such as the stone coach house with cobbled stables, the enclosed kitchen garden, stone entrance and driveway, and of course the ‘Ha-Ha’. Local legend has it that a thatched Cottage on the lands once housed a Fr. Edmund Ryan, who was suspected to be harbouring persons who would hoard Pikes for the popular insurrection (the 1798 Rebellion) against the British Crown, in Wexford.
Also rumoured is the claim that Daniel O’Connell, the Liberator as he was known, stayed in Turtulla, on the occasion of one of his Monster Meetings, held nearby in Knockroe, in 1843. More recently and in living memory, Turtulla Lodge was renowned for hosting local priests for weekly Card games.
GARDEN AND GROUNDS
Many locals attest to the fact that Turtulla Lodge supported beautiful gardens, both floral to the front and wonderful Kitchen gardens to the rear. There exists huge potential to restore these areas as mostly, they are overgrown, but the outline and features remain.
THE LANDS
The lands are of superb quality and contain 67.5 acres (27.3 hectares), mostly laid out in five large fields, covering two folios. A small range of Farm buildings include a 3-span Hayshed and two stone out-houses.There is considerable road frontage to the main holding which includes the House and also to the field opposite to the main House, containing c. 10 acres.
The southern aspect of the facade, supports a balconied porch and overlooks an original eighteenth century landscape feature, a ‘Ha-Ha’ . The point of the ‘Ha- Ha’, was to give the viewer of the garden the illusion of an unbroken, continuous rolling lawn, whilst providing boundaries for grazing livestock. To the rear of the outbuildings lies a walled-in kitchen garden which was the pride and joy of previous generations of the Owner family, making them self sufficient in all manner of fruits and vegetables annually.
TIPPERARY AND CULTURE
Set right in the heartland of Ireland, Tipperary gives you the very best of Irish culture, plenty of fascinating history, a range of fabulous old castles, lots of outdoor activities and a wide variety of locally sourced food.
Tipperary is the home of the iconic Rock of Cashel and Cahir Castle, the European film destination of the year. It also has a selection of impressive little gems across Ireland’s Ancient East such as Athassel Abbey, Lorrha Monastic Village and St. Patrick’s Well.
With some of the most fertile rolling hills in the country, Tipperary is an incredible place to explore on horseback or bike, with stunning lakes and leafy Blueways of Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands.
